Why men need to be photographed differently
Most of the men I photograph last posed for a picture at school. They arrive with tense shoulders, hands that don't know where to go and a smile that looks borrowed.
The shoot ends with a set of shots for your professional profile, social media and company website. But this isn't a product shoot. I look at the face of the person in front of the lens, not at a checklist in a package.
In my experience, a men's portrait isn't about arranging a face. It's about disarming the resistance a man has towards himself before he sees the final shot. The rest is technique.
A good portrait doesn't make you look cooler than you are. It shows you the way you look in a good week, in good light, in a good mood. That's enough.
Who this shoot is for
Most of my clients are men between 25 and 45. Engineers, lawyers, developers, doctors, business owners. They have one thing in common: they want photos that finally look like them at their best.
The shoot works well in a few situations:
A profile photo, a speaker photo, a picture for the company website. Suit, shirt, blazer, neutral background.
Personal trainer, speaker, content creator. A consistent look for months ahead.
After a new job, after turning forty, after an important chapter in life. Good photos change how you think about yourself every day.
Team photos, board portraits, shots for proposals and press materials, all in one consistent style.
What I don't do
Some photographers do other things better. To be clear, and so you don't waste time on a consultation, here are a few things I say no to:
I don't smooth out wrinkles, remove scars or reshape noses. If you're after a filter-style edit, I'm not your photographer.
I don't ask you to smile on cue or stare at one spot. If a laugh comes naturally, great. If not, I take a serious portrait.
Male nude photography is a separate specialism. I recommend other photographers for it and don't take these jobs.
How I work
The foundation is available light, because it brings out features best and gives skin depth. When conditions call for it, I add continuous light or flash. The first lets me work quickly and react to expressions, the second sculpts the face precisely and gives the shots a bold character.
There's little technical fuss on set. No assistants moving gear around, no waiting. I focus on you: how you hold your shoulders, how you respond to direction, when your face does something interesting. That matters more than setting up another lamp.
The editing is natural. I even out skin tone, remove temporary blemishes and balance the light. I don't change your facial features. If you have lines around your eyes, you have them in the photo too. They give a face character that can't be added in editing.
Where we shoot
The studio is a spacious room with controlled light and several backdrops. It works well for classic portraits, professional profile photos and shots with a rawer, urban feel.
Outdoors gives you more variety in one day. I work all over Warsaw with no travel surcharge. In the Gold and Platinum packages we combine both locations.
What the day of the shoot looks like
- Pre-shoot consultation. We message or talk on the phone about your goal, style and location. I advise you on what to pack.
- Warm-up.The first ten minutes are a chat without the camera. Most people relax almost straight away.
- Posing with a simple system.I show you a pose and you copy it. I tell you where to look and how to set your shoulders.
- Outfit and location changes. Two to three outfits in a one-hour shoot, four to six in a two-hour one. Every outfit brings a different energy.
- Gallery and photo selection. The unedited shots go to a private gallery within 24 hours. You pick your favourites and I send the retouched photos within 5 days.
How to prepare
Get a haircut two to three days before the shoot, never on the day. That way your hair sits naturally. Tidy up your facial hair on the morning of the shoot.
Pack two to three outfits for a one-hour shoot, four to six for a two-hour one. What works best is an everyday outfit, a smart casual outfit and a sharper going-out option. Avoid big logos and clothes that hang loose or feel tight.
Bring your own props. Glasses, a watch, a coffee, a guitar, a book. Details that are genuinely part of you work better than anything else.
Gift voucher for a men's photoshoot
A voucher for a men's photoshoot in Warsaw is a popular gift for a birthday, a promotion or a stag party. I issue it as an e-voucher on the same day.
The recipient books the date themselves, it's valid for a year, and the package is chosen at booking.
What clients say
I signed up mainly to finally have something decent on my professional profile. The shoot was run in a very practical way, no forced banter and no photographer talk about lighting. He tells you what to do and keeps an eye on the details. I'd highly recommend it to anyone in my industry.
I was more stressed before the shoot than before a job interview. After fifteen minutes it was completely gone. He showed me the poses, explained the tweaks to my hands and shoulders, and I just followed directions. I got the unedited shots within a day and the retouched ones in less than a week.
I had the photos taken mainly for my professional profile and my clinic's social media. He understood right away that I didn't want anything plastic or fake smiles for the camera. The shots look like me at my best, not like someone else in my shirt. Clients started commenting on my profile within a few days.
