I once photographed a family whose son was two at the time. For the first half hour he sat behind his mum's back and wouldn't look at me. I didn't push. I played with the camera on the grass, took photos of the parents and waited. After thirty minutes the boy walked over by himself and asked if he could hold the camera. The best photos came in the next ten minutes.
They came back two years later. Their son was four by then and immediately started showing me how to run between the trees in Łazienki Park. The photos from both sessions show more than how much he grew. They show how his relationship with his parents changed. You can't plan that. You can only capture it.
