You do it with ten years from now in mind.

It's not about pretty pictures. It's about being able to show your daughter, ten years from now, what she looked like at two, running around the park with a twig in her hand. About letting your son see what his first birthday looked like, not in a blurry phone snap, but in a photo that really shows something.

Your phone takes thousands of photos, but rarely one that truly makes you stop and look. A children's photoshoot in Warsaw is a decision that this stage of your child's life deserves something lasting.

There are families I've been photographing since pregnancy. Children I first saw as newborns now run up to the camera by themselves. A mum once told me after a family session that it was her first photo with her daughter in months, because her phone was full of pictures of the child but she wasn't in a single one. That's exactly the moment I do this for.

Your child doesn't have to smile. Doesn't have to look at the camera. Doesn't have to be good or sit still. Doesn't even have to know they're being photographed.

The best photos happen when a child is simply themselves. A three-year-old staring at an ant on the ground is more herself than when she stands up straight and looks into the lens. A five-year-old who has just forgotten I'm there: that's the moment I'm looking for.

A two-year-old mid-tantrum has something on their face that no pose can replace.

First you build a connection, then come the photos.

Once a five-year-old told me at the door that he wasn't going to pose. He sat in the corner and crossed his arms. Instead of getting the camera out, I sat down next to him and we talked about dinosaurs. Ten minutes later he stood up, picked up his baby brother and gave me a questioning look. I took the photo. One of the best in my portfolio.

That's when I understood that children don't sense the camera, they sense intention. If they feel that someone really wants to be with them, not just photograph them, everything gets easier.

Today I work mainly as a children's photographer in Warsaw, and sessions with kids are the only kind of job where I never know what's going to happen.

I follow your child, not the other way round.

The best shot usually comes when nobody is planning it.

For the first 10 to 15 minutes the camera stays down. Your little one checks out the studio, runs around outside, plays with the props. I ask about their toys, their teddy's name, what they like to eat. Once your child stops seeing me as a stranger with a camera, I start taking photos.

The session plan is flexible, because children don't stick to plans. A baby who falls asleep halfway through, a toddler who only wants to go down the slide, a shoe lost in the grass: these aren't problems. They're material.

Children don't ruin a session. They make it.

I've photographed children who cried for the first 20 minutes at the sight of the studio. There was a two-year-old who sat behind his mum for half the session. For the first part I only photographed his eyes peeking out from behind her leg, and his parents now have those photos printed at 60 x 90 cm. There were also siblings who argued for the whole first hour.

I know particularly well how to work with:

  • Shy children

They need more time to warm up. I give it to them without asking and without pressure.
  • Children with sensory sensitivities

A studio can be overwhelming. We agree in advance what to change: different lighting, less equipment, a calmer setting.
  • Siblings

Two kids aren't double the difficulty, just a completely different dynamic. I know when to photograph them together and when separately.
  • Babies

They have their own rhythm and it can't be changed. The session follows the baby's rhythm, not the photographer's plan.
  • Children with bad experiences from previous sessions

I start more slowly, with no pressure, and the camera only comes out once the child is ready.

Outdoors or studio?

Outside

Outdoors

Gives more freedom, because your child can run, explore and be themselves on the move. We most often work in Łazienki Park, Skaryszewski Park and on the Vistula Boulevards. The best light in Łazienki is late in the afternoon, when the sun is low between the trees.

Inside

Studio

The studio in Praga or Targówek works well with babies and with families who want a specific look. It also has the advantage that rain isn't a problem.

My children's photography in Warsaw is mostly outdoors, but with babies and on rainy days the studio works better. Not sure what to choose? I'll suggest an option that suits your child's age.

How to prepare

A good photoshoot with your child doesn't require any photography preparation from parents. After booking you get a guide: what to wear, what to avoid and how to prepare your child the day before.

  • A well-rested, well-fed child, because a cranky little one makes the session harder for everyone.
  • Two or three outfits, because a change of clothes refreshes the energy and adds variety to the photos.
  • A favourite toy, which helps at the start while your child is still getting used to the camera.
  • Don't try to direct your child during the session, because every word from a parent changes their expression.

Parents' reviews

I had zero hope that Kacper would cooperate at all. He usually walks the other way when he sees a camera. For the first 15 minutes Tomek didn't photograph him at all, he just talked to him about cars. Then Kacper started posing for him by himself. We have the photos printed in our living room.

outdoor session

We bought a voucher for a session for our daughter as a birthday present. She was very nervous because she'd never been to a photoshoot before. After fifteen minutes she was laughing and had completely forgotten about the camera. The photos show Zosia, not a child from a catalogue.

studio session

We did a session with our older daughter and our newborn at the same time. Tomek handled all three of them: a mum just after giving birth, a daughter who wanted to be the centre of attention all the time, and a sleeping baby. The photos came out natural, without any forced idyll. I especially recommend him to parents who worry it's impossible with small children.
